Im also just beginning to learn to model. Im currently using XSI|Modtool and just search around for modelling tutorials and once you do a few you will sorta get the concept of it and what to do. I have a site with video tutorials. I will try to find the link. Let me warn you though, modeling is very hard.

The Mod tool is free but to activate all it's features you need to register your personal details, which is no big deal really.

It's the advanced version that you have to pay for.

Its funny that so many people who don't know how to model own a full copy of 3dsmax LOL!

Anyway, try looking at some tutorials, there are loads of em..and please don't restrict yourself to just watching video tutorials of weapon modelling

I just started modeling, got myself a real life legal copy of Cinema 4d 8.5. Tutorials are definitely the way to go. Not only can you make some pretty stuff, but you get a really good idea of how to use the different tools.

These programs can do some absolutely amazing stuff. Looking at their demo reel and sites that have modeling contests makes me realize how good I'll never be at this. =P
