Plans change.

Plus, L4D2 > L4D (or rather L4$ amirite). It has enhanced AI Director and opens up new possibilities for Valve and mapmakers alike.

Nobody is forcing you to update. If you don't want to buy L4D2 because you don't feel it's a good enough value, then simply don't buy it. Vote with your wallet. But stop going into every thread and bitchin' and doing your L4$ stuff on how Valve is absolutely killing your wallet with a $50 game.

Why should anyone invest any time in mapping for a game that's just gonna be obsolete in a year? Yes they've said the maps will go over but who wants to keep up with each paid for iteration just to be able to continue with their work.

Just feels like they've abandoned L4D, seeing they haven't even added the possibility of custom campaigns yet (I'm not saying they aren't going to update it, I know they are, it just feels that way).

Actually lets use the Battlefield series as example for this. Loads of people abandoned the first game, when Battlefield: Vietnam was released. Then Battlefield 2, and finally Battlefield 2142.

This is what I'm most worried about - e.g. all the shit that was wrong with Condition Zero.

There will still be people playing L4D once L4D2 comes out.

Just like there were people playing UT2003 when UT2004 was out?

They don't even sell UT2003 on Steam...

They sure did well at completely splitting the community to accomplish that.

I really wouldn't doubt that after hearing all of the uproar from L4D2 that Valve would do something similar to what Epic did and release a discount voucher for those that already own the first game.

However, this is way more different than what UT2004 was to UT2003. It's not like Valve is taking the original, refining it and then re-releasing it essentially. They are doing a new story, and adding new characters, weaopns, enemies and a new gametype.

I agree that it's a bad thing. If I were working at Valve, this is what I would suggest...

- Offer L4D2 as a discount to L4D1 owners
- Bring over all L4D1 content to L4D2 (so on 360 you only need to use the L4D2 disc, and on PC you only need to play L4D2)
- Utilize the same matchmaking as L4D1 so the community wouldn't be split (obviously only match up those who have the same content, ie if someone is searching for L4D2 campaign map, you can't bring in a L4D1 player).

Essentially, I think they should just treat it as a large expansion, so they don't split the community. For all we know, this is what they're already doing. However, I just sort of have that feeling that they won't do this since they are really pushing L4D2 as a full sequel.

I know everyone thinks I'm defending Valve, and I guess I am. However, until proven otherwise, I'm giving Valve the benefit of the doubt that they will make this sequel justified and won't screw everyone over. Personally, I would love for them to just release the original as paid DLC for the original game so they won't split the community, and that way I can just go to L4D in Steam to play both games.

While I think them releasing it as a paid expansion/"DLC" would've had a somewhat lesser backlash, it still goes against everything Valve once stood for.

You don't spend 13 years showing that you care about your community, and then wonder why there's a backlash when you suddenly go back on everything that set you apart, and above the other developers out there.

What about Condition Zero?

TBH, I think this will likely just encourage Valve to just stop making promises about their games about DLC and such. Valve is getting screwed over for things they said when they didn't know that they were going to instead make this into a full sequel. Thus, in the future I think when people ask about what sort of post release support for future games, they'll probably give a "We will do the best we can, but no promises on what that will entail" rather than a "Oh, we're giving you new campaigns, boss zombies, weapons and a whole bunch of other shit! It's gonna rock!"
