Chapter 3 - Route Canal
From HalfLife 2 Knowledge Base
You begin the chapter in a hallway with a first aid station. If you don't need it already, you likely will in a minute. Around the corner, two Metrocops have just killed or severely wounded a man, and a woman is crouched protectively over him. She cries for help. As soon as you appear, one will rush you with a baton and the other will start firing his gun at you. Beat them both down with your crowbar and grab the USP Match Pistol. Run back to the first aid station and heal up if you need to before proceeding.
Down the hallway, you can run up a flight of stairs, and then back down a stairway to a railway. Both ends are blocked by force fields. Don't get hit by the train. Instead, when the train stops, jump from halfway up the stairs onto the train and then onto the opposite ledge. Almost immediately, Civil Protection will open fire. Use your crowbar to break through the boarded up doorway into the house, and take cover. Move the rubbage blocking the house's back door, and in the back yard you'll find an ammo crate and a medpack.
Around the side of the house, jump a bent chainlink fence and proceed parallel to the tracks until you find an open vent. Duck and enter it - inside is some ammo, medpacks, and power for your suit. Smash through the vent cover and jump down to the tracks - now you're on the other side of that force field! Unfortunately, so are a number of Civil Protection troops. They'll roll explosive barrels down a staircase at you, but don't let that distract you from the oncoming train. Either will kill you quick.
Under the staircase is a power pack for your suit, and at the top is a first aid station. Run down a tunnel, upstairs, and across a catwalk that goes over the tracks. Yes, you're being pursued. At the other end of this tunnel, you'll emerge at another railway. Across the tracks is a medstation and crates full of ammo and suit power.
Nearby, a bridge leads over a canal and ends in a door that won't open. Jump down into the water and wade/swim until you reach a red boxcar. Climb the ladder at the rear of the boxcar and drop down through the ceiling hatch into it, landing atop a medkit. Inside, a man and a vortigaunt will get you started on the underground railroad. Before you go, the vortigaunt will charge your suit, adding 30 points of energy.
Jump out of the boxcar and make your way through the debris, using the crowbar where you must. Ahead, you'll see your first barnacle snap up a pigeon. Further on, a man in a sewer vent will cry for help, then be shot in the back by Civil Protection. A second later, you'll come under fire. Duck into the sewer vent and take out two civil protection soldiers.
This is Station 8, where you'll find suit power and medkits aplenty. You'll be warned over the radio that the underground is being flooded with manhacks. Climb up the ladder and quickly take out the two soldiers from behind, then get behind the tripod machinegun. It should make quick work of the civil protection troops and scanners that rush you, but once the RPGs start coming in, jump back down the ladder and take shelter. Go back outside. On the other side of that wrecked blue van is a tunnel, but watch out for all the barnacles.
A woman hiding in a disconnected pipe urges you on, into a water-filled area where civil protection drops a number of flaming barrels that soon explode. Stay underwater to avoid the damage, and follow the next pipe out. A number of civil protection troops will fire at you from atop a bridge, but you can shoot the barrels at the base of the bridge and wreck the whole thing. Go under the destroyed bridge and up a hill of rubble, then duck and shove the barrels out of the way to enter a tunnel. The ground here is very slippery, and many barnacles await you at the base of the hill. Throw barrels down the slope, then shoot them once they've been snatched up, just before they go out of sight. You can also use other tires and inert barrels to distract the barnacles and sneak past.
Past the barnacles, duck and jump into a water channel. Civil Protection will once again throw down exploding barrels. Swim across the water and climb a ladder to jump over the metal gate. Continue swimming, and at the far end of the water, climb up onto the docks, where you can find medical supplies and ammunition. Run along the docks and duck into the sewer tunnel, avoiding exploding barrels where you can.
Down in a muddy room, you'll find your first puzzle. You have to pile cinder blocks on one end of a plank until, see-saw-like, the other end is raised high enough to climb onto and jump up onto the ledge and enter a tunnel. At the other end of this tunnel is a helicopter. We don't like the helicopter. In fact, you will learn to hate the helicopter.
Run your ass off. Time your runs, since the helicopter needs a few seconds to recharge in between bursts. There's a ledge with a railing not far away. Jump up, avoiding the barnacle, and move the crap from in front of the blue door and jump through. There's a ladder you can descend if you need medkits and ammunition. Further down the tunnel, if you duck and swim under a ledge, you can find more medkits and a horribly charred corpse.
There's another slippery slope nearby with barnacles at the bottom. This ought to be familiar by now - feed them some barrels. The tunnel at the bottom will lead you to another similar slope. This is getting old. At the bottom of this one is a tunnel that ends in stairs which lead up and out, into fresh air. Back to the frickin' helicopter. Just stay left and you can quickly find another tunnel which leads back underground.
Things get awfully quiet here, aside from the sound of you clearing debris. Down this tunnel, you'll find another rebel who will chat for a minute, and then show you how to deal with the manhacks that soon show up. Then he urges you on. Geez -- nobody wants poor Gordon around.
Move down the next tunnel, where you'll find still more manhacks. Use your crowbar and you should do well, but be careful, as the manhacks may unintentionally ignite some barrels. Soon, you'll come to a gate where you'll briefly be outdoors and encounter manhacks and civil protection. You can then jump down into the next area, although a nearby vent leads to a dead-end area with a lot of supplies if you need them.
In the lower chamber, you'll fight a few civil protection troops, and pick up a shiny new MP7 Submachine Gun. There's a neaby vent tunnel where you can get a fragmentation grenade and some suit power, but watch out for the crawling zombie. On the way back another metrocop will drop down from above. At the far end of this area, you'll find a pool of water with a rotating grate. Of death. Sure, it looks harmless enough, but be careful or it will crush you. Underwater is a tunnel which you must swim through. Luckily, there's one place in the tunnel to pop up and take a breath.
At the other side, you'll find yourself near steam pipes. Work your way along them until you find stairs. The stairs will allow you to climb up and get on top of the steam pipes. Move along them, avoiding the steam vents, barnacles, and a manhack or two. Break some boards with your crowbar and jump down, beneath the steam pipe. It looks like a dead end, but there's a small water pit. This is your way out.
Continuing underwater, you'll come up on the other side of a metal fence, looking back at the rotating grate of death. Climb up the ladder and dry off. Then jump back in, because civil protection is rolling a butt-ton of barrels at you. You'll need to fight off the soldiers, then enter a tunnel and fight off some manhacks. Beyond the manhacks, things get dark, but there is a ton of ammunition, suit power, and medkits.
Climb through a vent and come out into a room full of explosive barrels. Not a place you want to be. Fight the manhacks off very carefully. You'll definitely want to use your crowbar here, since stray bullets will quickly get you killed.
Climb the ladder, then work your way along the pipe until you reach the catwalk, which will bring you to a second room. If you jump your way down the pipes in here (not the ladder) you can reach a well-hidden valve which will raise the water level in both rooms. Now, if you go back to the room with all the explosive barrels, you can climb down the ladder beneath the floor grate and swim through an underwater tunnel to a new room. (Note that with some patience and ingenuity you can stack some oil cans and climb through the tunnel without raising the water level, but then you will be completely stuck -- no way forward or back -- in the next room with the wire-spool lilypads.)
The ladder in this room brings you to a dead-end ledge, and the opposite side is unreachable. Another puzzle!
Swim down underwater and use your crowbar to break the boards holding down crates and wooden wire-spools. The spools will float to the surface, and you can use them as lilypads. Swim around, pushing them into place (you can do it with only one) and then climb the ladder to the ledge and jump across to the side with the tunnel.
This tunnel leads back outdoors to another narrow canal where you'll be ambushed by manhacks, scanners, and civil protection. A tunnel at the other end has some supplies guarded by barnacles, and a ladder up to a long bridge of planks and girders will drop you back down into another tunnel. At the end of this tunnel, your suit's geiger counter goes off - watch out for the radioactive yellow sludge!
Ahead is station 6, where you're welcomed and then hurried along. As usual. Just ahead, a giant shell full of headcrabs lands, killing a man and a woman. Work your way through the debris and past the headcrabs, avoiding the radioactive sludge, until you reach a dangling power line. Cross the planks, dodging the power line, and then carefully move through the electrified trailer. Work your way around the chain link fence and along the wooden walkway until you reach the next station, where you're given an airboat.
Take your new airboat down the putrid yellow river and try to get a feel for the controls. Not far along, you'll have to get out to turn a wheel and open a gate. Oh! There's a headhumper hiding right there -- how cute.
