From HalfLife 2 Knowledge Base
First Seen: Chapter 3, Route Kanal
- Located in chapter(s): 3, 4, 6-13
- Health: 10
- Attack Damage: 5
Description
A small alien creature that attaches itself to a host and turns them into a zombie. It is tan in color and consist of a rounded body with four spiked limbs. Headcrabs can jump quite far to attach the host's head and usually make a screeching sound when they jump.
After attaching itself to the host, the headcrab becomes part of the host's nervous system and begins the mutation progress. The host will grow large claws and a large mouth vertically in its chest. A mutated host with its headcrab controller is called a zombie.
As the mutation progresses, the host becomes even more deformed, and eventually becomes Gonome, a faster and smarter zombie which can pull off its own skin to throw at the enemy - doing significant damage. (The Gonome appears only in Half Life: Opposing Force and the mod Sven Co-op).
Headcrab appears to be quite low on the foodchain in its native Xen habitat, as both bullsquids and vortigaunts have been observed feeding on them. Their intellect seems to correlate with their low evolutionary standing as they will move through dangerous areas without concern to heed or consequence, even when their fellow headcrabs attempt to move through the area and die in front of them. As such, they will go through areas that are on fire or under siege, ignoring everything from guns to artillery to mortars. However, they seem to be able to tolerate toxic waste quite well.
